Today, anime films dominate the global box office, streaming platforms aggressively compete for audiences, and manga drives blockbuster franchises that influence fashion, gaming, music, and internet culture itself.

VIZ’s own history tracks that transformation almost perfectly — from the analog discovery era of the 1980s to today’s algorithm-driven fandom economy where series are streamed, clipped, and lived online. In celebration of this 40-year trajectory, we’re revisiting our biggest hits spanning across four decades. From now through November, we’ll be highlighting each decade’s most notable manga and anime series, starting with the beginning, the 1980s.

1980s – The Analog Era

VIZ’s stories reached more readers than ever before. This decade marked a shift:
fandom going digital, growing louder, and starting to feel like something shared—
