Mista’s eyes were as cold as ice. “So, Fugo, what have you been up to all this time?”
Pannacotta Fugo could not answer. He could not think of anything he could possibly say.
“Our reports tell us you’ve been playing piano at a bar for the past six months. Imagine my surprise when I found out you knew how to play the piano. I had no clue. And we’ve known each other for a long time too. You well-to-do kids are in a league of your own. I bet you have all sorts of refined hobbies, don’tcha?”
When Fugo seemed to mumble something under his breath, Mista wasted no time asking, “Huh? What’s that? You said something just now. If you got something to say, then say it loud and clear.”
The corners of Fugo’s lips pulled into a grimace as he replied stiffly, “Nothing, I—never mind.”
However, what he wanted to say was this: You’re wrong. I’m no spoiled rich kid.
Mista raised an eyebrow, but decided to move on from the topic. “Then let’s flip the script. There are things you want to ask me, aren’t there? Things you want to know. I’ll answer you, so ask away. Well?”
Several seconds passed before Fugo eventually gained the courage to ask, “Is he—is he really dead?”
Mista saw the tinge of unbearable pain coloring Fugo’s eyes. Furrowing his brow, Mista looked over to Sheila E. “Hey, Sheila E., plug your ears.”
“Yes, sir.” She responded promptly to the order, digging her fingers into her ears with so much force it looked like it might draw blood.
Her thorough display of loyalty was almost morbid, but Mista paid it absolutely no attention. He turned back to Fugo, addressing him in a hushed tone, “So, you heard Bucciarati is dead.”
