Welcome to the Nihongo Lesson feature. We strive to give you useful manga-based Japanese language tips and maybe even a glimpse into the translation process. This week’s lesson will focus on Black Clover and the excitement surrounding the premiere of its anime series! It’s a big deal when a series in Shonen Jump gets an anime. It’s a time for the fans and the creator to celebrate!

HOUSOUKAISHI (ほうそうかいし)

HOUSOUKAISHI literally means “start of broadcast.” This term was plastered all over the Japanese Shonen Jump last week, along with dates and times. All of it was about the Black Clover anime premiere and was intended to get the fans—and even Tabata sensei himself—hyped up. If you read his recent author comments, you’ll see just how happy he is. KYOUDAI (きょうだい)

KYOUDAI means “siblings” or “brothers.” The current manga plot is all about the KYOUDAI battle between Finral and Langris. These two couldn’t be more different. Hopefully Asta can set Langris straight! 

And the first episode of the anime also brings up themes of brotherhood. Asta and Yuno may not be related, but they are as close as real KYOUDAI. Their friendly rivalry is one of the best parts of this series!
