Welcome to the Nihongo Lesson feature. We strive to give you useful manga-based Japanese language tips and maybe even a glimpse into the translation process. This week’s lesson continues to focus on Naruto! As one of Shonen Jump’s greatest series heads for an exciting conclusion, let’s take a look at some of the language being used in the recent chapters. This week we’ll focus on some of Naruto’s recent dialogue!

TOMODACHI (ともだち)

TOMODACHI is “friend.” One of the best parts about the last few Naruto chapters has been the acknowledging by both Naruto and Sasuke that the other is their best friend. And yet, they came to completely opposite conclusions. Naruto wants to save his friend while Sasuke must kill his only friend to achieve his objective. Is a happy conclusion not possible...?

TSUREKAERU (つれかえる)

TSUREKAERU is literally something like “to drag back.” Naruto has been trying to bring Sasuke back for most of the series. I guess it figures that this is how the series would conclude. Can Naruto finally do what he promised Sakura way back when?

TASUKERU (たすける)

TASUKERU is to “save” or “rescue.” It’s almost hard to believe that at the beginning of the series, Naruto was frequently in need of being rescued. And now he’s saved the ninja world from some of the most powerful villains ever. But can Naruto save his best friend from himself?
