Welcome to the Nihongo Lesson feature. We strive to give you useful manga-based Japanese language tips and maybe even a glimpse into the translation process. This week’s lesson will feature terms from My Hero Academia: Vigilantes! ORE GA KIMASHITA (おれがきました)

Like many characters in the My Hero Academia world, Koichi is a huge fan of All Might. His hero outfit is actually an All Might hoodie. And in the latest chapter, Koichi even gets to utter All Might’s catchphrase. ORE GA KIMASHITA means “I am here.” However, Koichi says it a little differently from All Might’s version, which is WATASHI GA KITA. The basic meaning is the same, but Koichi’s “I am here” seems to be a mishmash of a tougher, less formal version of “I” with a more polite “am here.”

RENSHUU (れんしゅう)

RENSHUU means “practice.” Koichi may be a passionate hero who saves people under the moniker of the Crawler, but his powers are pretty mundane. He can slide around at only a moderate speed. However, the latest chapter shows that he can also do it in midair! If he can perfect this ability with lots of RENSHUU, he might be able to become a big-time hero like his idol!
