Welcome to the Nihongo Lesson feature. We strive to give you useful manga-based Japanese language tips and maybe even a glimpse into the translation process. This week’s lesson will focus on the exciting golf manga Robot × Laserbeam. The Vermillion Bird tournament has just started, but what a strong start it’s been! Thanks to all the interesting new characters, this series has truly elevated its game. But Robo’s at a huge disadvantage against a field of talented and experienced players. If that’s not all, he’s got to worry about Don Traps!

KYORI (きょり)

KYORI means “distance.” Don Okuma, an organizer of the tournament, has it out for Robo. And he’s done something to the golf course that’s messing up Robo’s perfect accuracy. Robo can’t seem to get the KYORI on his shots correct as he keeps hitting the ball too far or not far enough. Will Robo be able to overcome these Don Traps?!

KOSHOU (こしょう)

KOSHOU means to “break down” or “malfunction.” Basically, when a machine stops working. And when Robo misses yet another shot, it actually looks like he’s malfunctioning. He’s not actually a robot, is he? I hope he didn’t short-circuit when he fell into the pond.
