Welcome to the Nihongo Lesson feature. We strive to give you useful manga-based Japanese language tips and maybe even a glimpse into the translation process. This week’s lesson will feature some words that appeared in last week’s chapter of Food Wars!: Shokugeki no Soma. The current team battle arc has continued to heat up as it heads for a delicious climax, but which chef will reign supreme? Could it be Momo and her extraordinary baking skills? She is one colorful character, which gives us the opportunity to review colors!

AKA, MIDORI, KIIRO (あか、みどり、きいろ)

AKA is “red,” MIDORI is “green” and KIIRO is “yellow.” Momo has shown impressive skills with her dessert making so far, but in last week’s chapter she created a whole castle of a cake! Not only was her cake huge, it was multicolored and covered in adorable animal decorations!

CHAIRO, MURASAKI, KURO (ちゃいろ、むらさき、くろ)

CHAIRO is “brown,” MURASAKI is “purple” and KURO is black. By using ingredients like strawberries, blueberries, matcha, chocolate and sesame, Momo was able to create a rainbow of sweets. Is she a chef or is she an artist?!
