Welcome to the Nihongo Lesson feature. We strive to give you useful manga-based Japanese language tips and maybe even a glimpse into the translation process. This week’s lesson will focus on the emotional rivalry between Deku and Bakugo in My Hero Academia. These last few chapters have featured some really powerful scenes depicting what these two characters are experiencing. This is what makes Shonen Jump so great!

KOERU (こえる)

KOERU means “to surpass.” It can be used when talking about going over an object like a fence, but in these latest chapters the context is all about surpassing your rival in strength. Bakugo has been stronger than his peers since he was a young kid, and seeing Deku’s growth up close has really affected him. Can he get over his anger and develop some respect for his classmate?

MAKERUKA (まけるか)

MAKERUKA means “as if I’d lose,” or as translated in the chapter, “I ain’t gonna lose!” All Might’s explanation that Deku’s desire to save others and Bakugo’s determination to win can combine to make them ultimate heroes if they work together was brilliant storytelling. These two kids really could become the perfect team!
