Nihongo Lesson 12/16/16

This week's lesson is gonna knock you out!

By John Bae December 16, 2016

Welcome to the Nihongo Lesson feature. We strive to give you useful manga-based Japanese language tips and maybe even a glimpse into the translation process. This week’s lesson will focus on the popular hero manga One-Punch Man! This week’s chapter was chock-full of plot developments and interesting Japanese terms!

KAIJIN (かいじん)

KAIJIN means “monster” or, literally, a “mysterious person.” The English word “monster” is often used in manga and anime, but the evil organization in One-Punch Man is called the KAIJIN KYOKAI, or "Monster Association" in English. It looks like they’re launching an all-out war against the Hero Association!

KIKEN (きけん)

KIKEN means “dangerous,” and that’s exactly what all of these monsters are—especially that spiky one with the “free hugs” sign! When even powerful heroes like Genos and Metal Bat are getting taken out, you know things are serious. Will the Hero Association be forced to rely on Saitama again?

TSUYOI (つよい)

TSUYOI means “strong,” and the word is part of this week’s chapter title. A very fitting title indeed, as a lot of powerful characters are in the spotlight. Just how TSUYOI is the mysterious Suiryu? He handled Snek without a problem, but that might not prove much. Then there’s the Monster King! Hopefully he puts up more of a fight than the Earth King, Sea King and Sky King did!
