Welcome to the Nihongo Lesson feature. We strive to give you useful manga-based Japanese language tips and maybe even a glimpse into the translation process. This week’s lesson will focus on the amazing return of One-Punch Man. This series always dazzles with beautiful art and heart-pounding action, and these recent chapters are no exception! Plus, last week’s chapter had to be one of the longest in Shonen Jump history!

MUKADE (ムカデ)

MUKADE means “centipede.” Last week’s chapter gives us a chance to relive one of the funnier jokes in One-Punch Man. This series keeps introducing larger and larger MUKADE. We first got Centikohai and Centisenpai back at the start of this arc. Seeing Metal Bat crush one MUKADE and then having his senpai come for revenge was hilarious. And soon after that we got the ultimate MUKADE, Centichoro!

CHORO (ちょうろう)

CHORO means “great elder.” Centichoro is on a totally different scale than his predecessors. Sure, they were huge, but CHORO can destroy a city with ease. And he’s super tough. He has the ability to shed his skin when damaged, and he seems to get stronger and stronger as the fight goes on. How could anyone ever defeat him? Oh… Right, Saitama. At least Centichoro can be proud that his defeat required Saitama to get “serious.”
