Welcome to the Nihongo Lesson feature. We strive to give you useful manga-based Japanese language tips and maybe even a glimpse into the translation process. This week’s lesson will feature words from the new JUMP START—ACT-AGE. One of the great things about a manga anthology magazine is that you get stories from all types of different genres. Action titles are what Shonen Jump is famous for, but it’s also had many titles that broke that mold over the years. But one about becoming an actress? Now that’s fresh!

YAKUSHA (やくしゃ)

YAKUSHA is “actor/actress.” The path to becoming a great actor isn’t easy. There’s sure to be a lot of…drama…along the way. And that’s what makes this a great setting for a manga series.

KEI YONAGI (夜凪景)

We’ve often discussed the importance of names in manga. There can be hidden meanings presented in the name that set the theme for that character. Let’s check out the name of the main character in ACT-AGE. YONAGI means “evening calm.” And yes, this character sure is calm. At least until she needs to break out her amazing acting skills. And KEI means “scene,” like a scene in a play. Now that’s perfect naming!

HOSHI (星)

HOSHI means “star” or “stars” and it’s the last name of the CEO of the Stars talent agency. Naming your company sure must be easy when your name is that perfect of a match. It will be exciting to see if Yonagi can reach for the stars in the HOSHI agency.
