How Do You Sculpt a Kakashi Figure?

See how Gecco made the Kakashi figure available exclusively at NYCC!

We spoke with the sculptors over at Gecco and asked them about the process they use to create their awesome figures. Here's what they said!

First, the sculptor looks at the model sheet carefully to understand the goal of the sculpt. After fixing the idea in his mind, he starts to build the armature using aluminum wire.

After the pose is fixed, he starts working on the face. The material is an epoxy clay called “Magic Sculpt,” which gets hard by mixing two ingredients, resin and hardener. After that, he then puts clay on the model sheet of the face and shapes it quickly before it hardens.

After the material hardens, the drawing of the face is copied on the back of the head, which will be the guide for sculpting. The sculptor carves it using motor tools. While doing this, he uses a vacuum to prevent dust from building up. He keeps working on the face down to the tiniest details to make it perfect.

Now that the face is done, it's time to start on the body. First, he adds material on the armature. He uses aluminum foil to thicken it, then puts a clay called “Super Sculpey” on. This material stays soft until baked, so it is easy to mold into the rough shape. The aluminum foil will also help prevent the Super Sculpey from cracking after it is baked because it shrinks a little bit when it cools.

When the sculpting is almost done, the figure needs to be divided into small parts in order to be duplicated.

There are many small details that must be sculpted to make the figure more realistic.

Then it's sent to the factory for finishing touches. When it's all done, it looks like this!
