Welcome to the Nihongo Lesson feature. We strive to give you useful manga-based Japanese language tips and maybe even a glimpse into the translation process. This week’s lesson will focus on One Piece. With the Straw Hats having successfully escaped Big Mom’s territory, the focus now shifts to the Reverie. It’s a chance to see characters we haven’t seen in a long time. And it's an opportunity to review some basic Japanese words too!
NINGYOHIME means “mermaid princess.” What a treat it is to see Shirahoshi leave her bubble, literally, and see the outside world! And she’s making a huge impression, literally, on anyone who sees her. Too bad all she cares about is talking about Luffy.
TAIYOU is “sun.” It was also the name of the original Fish-Men pirates that featured amazing characters like Jimbei, Fisher Tiger and Arlong. Their fight for liberty is carried on in the form of Koala, the young slave girl saved by the Sun Pirates who is now in the revolutionary army.
TORI means “bird.” If Shirahoshi is getting excited by simple things like TORI, I can’t wait to see her reactions in the coming chapters. There must be some truly amazing sights waiting for her in Marijoa!
