SFX
I have given a lot of thought to sound effects in comics in the last two days. I just bought Bat Lash number 4 (a pretty good Western by DC comics.)
Format-wise Bat Lash uses more Sound Effects than any American comic I have read in ages. I suspect because it was done by Sergio Aragones and John Sevrin. Both of whom have been doing comics a long time and understand comics written on a page. They are not defective movies where the projector happens to be too slow. If two guys shoot guns and one has a silencer the silenced one gets the SE (Hey look it’s a scripting term for sound effect! Neat, right?) “vip” and the normal gun gets the SE “BLAM!”
How’s that relate to manga? Well manga as I’m sure you know uses sound effects all the time. For example I just finished Inubaka vol. 3. I LOVE it! It seems the sound of a urinating dog is “wizzz”—that’s a great effect in a comic. It may not be exactly onomatopoeic but by god you know what it means and it raises the humor quotient.
So for all you future comic/manga writers remember sound effects are our friends. Captions are too, but that’s for another day.

Last year I missed the VIZ Media panel at AX (long story). It would be awesome for them to return this year... *hint* *hint*

I think this means he is
coming to America. I would put good money that it is San Diego Comic
COn, but it would make more sense to do it at Anime Expo. I hope it is
Anime Expo, but Viz isn't even an exhibitor at Expo. I can dream,
though.

Weird Manga T-shirts No. 3
What if Malcolm McLaren and those loutish lads from London never formed a punk band? What if they moved to the fashionable district of Daikanyama where they opened a holistic services clinic? That’s the premise of God Save the Qi, the new shôjomedy from VIZ. And just what kind of bumbling, raffish horseplay should we expect from these dreamy expats? Imagine a Shampoo-era Warren Beatty or an Arthur-era Dudley Moore and you get the picture.
Just playing. This image is actually from
Tokyo Boys & Girls vol. 3. Good, straightforward shôjo from
Hot Gimmick creator Miki Aihara. Strangely though the art looks less like
HG and more like
Here Is Greenwood.
Semi-off topic sidebar here, but why is it that new-age practitioners always seem to choose that Papyrus font (or one of its derivatives) featured above for their signage? You see it
everywhere—promoting colonics, massage, yoga and pot clubs. Would it kill them to try a different typeface for once?

That's a great one, Ellen. Ranks right up there with "Arrogant insect" and "It all started with a simple automobile (
WMT 1 and 2)." I just might have to take you up on that one for a future post. You'll receive a shout-out. of course. Thanks for sharing!

Heheh, I noticed Otani's shirt too. Was just reading that the day before yesterday.

That reminds me, I was reading Love Com vol. 6 today, and I noticed that on pages 97-100, Ootani is wearing a shirt that says "This machine kills fascists." I got a laugh out of that, and I thought it might be good for future reference

A total 1, 2 Punch Out!
Uniqlo, (the Soho store pictured here) is partnering up with Shogakukan (they bring us Inuyasha, Black Lagoon, and Ranma ½) for an awesome set of manga shirts. Word around the office is that it’s to celebrate Shonen Sunday’s 50th Anniversary.
Just look at it! Its like all my favorite manga was so full of awesome that it exploded all over the store. We’re sending over our Sticker Booth and some other goodies, so we can participate from afar. If you take any sticker pictures please send them over! We’d love to see them. Pst~ and tell them to open up a store in San Francisco…right next to the VIZ office. :D

Yeah, its sort of a fusion of Sunday and Magazine for their combined fiftieth anniversary. (Jump's 40th is coming up as well later in the year) Personally I wouldn't mind seeing some of those shirts coming over here...but at the same time I sort of hope Viz can use this to, oh, rerelease and complete Urusei Yatsura. :P (or maybe get some other Sunday series alongside their Jump stuff....or maybe just get a lot of other stuff over but who knows if they'll sell)
