VIZ Media is looking for a Publishing Licensing Coordinator to join our Licensing team!

  • MUST be able to speak, read, and write professionally in both English and Japanese in order to communicate effectively with internal staff and Japanese companies
  • Knowledge of Japanese business practices and culture STRONGLY PREFERRED
  • Licensing or related experience STRONGLY PREFERRED
  • Knowledge of consumer entertainment such as anime, manga, and related merchandise and some exposure to entertainment media (comic, book, video) PREFERRED

SUMMARY

The Publishing Licensing Coordinator works closely with the Publishing Licensing team to help implement all aspects of the company’s publishing licensing policies, objectives, and initiatives for assigned territories. MUST be able to speak, read, and write professionally in both English and Japanese in order to communicate effectively with internal staff and Japanese companies.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES

  1. Works with internal staff to review cover design, copyright pages, and interior pages, including review of final samples
  2. Works closely with editorial staff for publishing acquisition process
  3. Works with marketing staff to review marketing/promotional plans and activities
  4. Communicates with licensors to obtain publishing and marketing/promotional plan approvals. Acts as liaison to Japanese licensors for publishing licensing matters
  5. Monitors approvals status to meet production schedules
  6. Presents new offers and suggestions to Publishing Licensing team
  7. Supports head of Publishing Licensing team in monitoring publishing agreements, royalty payments, and other financial transactions
  8. Provides strong administrative support to Publishing Licensing staff, including shipping/mailing, digital/physical filing, and making travel arrangements for departmental business trips.
  9. Provides (English → Japanese, Japanese → English) departmental translation of documents; interprets at meetings as needed
  10. Builds and maintains favorable working relationships with rights holders, partners, and licensees.
  11. Represents the company at various events and meetings, including travel to licensing and sales trade shows

In addition to these responsibilities, performs other activities as assigned

MINIMUM ABILITY, SKILL, AND KNOWLEDGE REQUIREMENTS

  • Ability to fluently read, write, and speak professionally in Japanese a MUST
  • Knowledge of Japanese business practices and culture STRONGLY PREFERRED
  • Knowledge of consumer entertainment such as anime, manga, and related merchandise and some exposure to entertainment media (comic, book, video) PREFERRED
  • Proficiency with computer usage, including email, Internet, and standard software
  • Ability to speak, read, and write effectively in English
  • Ability to pay strong attention to detail
  • Ability to prioritize and balance multiple projects simultaneously
  • Ability to manage time effectively and meet deadlines
  • Ability to communicate and interact professionally with culturally diverse clients, providers, and staff
  • Ability to work effectively in a small organization with an emphasis on teamwork
  • Ability to work legally in the United States
  • Ability to live in/commute to the San Francisco Bay Area
  • MUST be able to travel as needed

MINIMUM PREVIOUS EXPERIENCE, TRAINING, AND EDUCATION

  • 2-3 years of relevant business experience
  • Licensing or related experience STRONGLY PREFERRED
  • Equivalent of Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university, or equivalent, with a record that demonstrates suitable preparation for this position

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

This position does not supervise the work of others, but may provide guidance to temps and freelancers.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT/MINIMUM PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Approximately 90% of time spent on the job involves use of a video display terminal; therefore, must be able to sit for extended periods and to utilize standard ergonomics practices. Primarily works in an office environment, requiring the following activity: lifting and carrying materials weighing up to 15 pounds, kneeling, bending. Must be able to use standard office equipment such as copiers and faxes. MUST be able to travel both domestically and internationally as needed.

OTHER INFORMATION

Employees must adhere to all applicable VIZ Media policies and procedures. Regular and predictable attendance is required. Willingness and ability to work non-standard business hours, such as nights and weekends, on an as-needed basis is required. Employees must be able to cope effectively with deadlines and multiple demands.
