VIZ Style Sheet: Laura D.

How can your style be playfully edgy, reflect your daily mood, and be comfortable to "boot"?

By Annette Roman October 05, 2016

At VIZ we have a "style sheet" for each title, and now we’re adopting the term for this weekly series about style at our office! We are a diverse group, but we have one thing in common: we love manga, anime and Japanese pop culture. Luckily, we don't have a strict dress code. So set aside your expectations of "work safe" looks and enjoy this sneak peek into the style, clothes and lives of VIZ employees…

Come back each Wednesday to see new looks to complement your own unique style! And you can see all our Style Sheet posts here.

NAME: Laura Dooley

POSITION AT VIZ: Digital Publishing Production Coordinator

Fin Laura Hs

WHERE DID YOU GROW UP?
All over America! I'm bicoastal. :D I've moved across the country five times: New York, California, Connecticut, California, New York City, San Francisco… I've been in San Francisco for almost eight years now! It feels like home.

WHAT IS A TYPICAL DAY AT WORK FOR YOU?
Currently I'm the go-to source for all things Digital Publishing, so a typical day is managing anything to do with that: planning the schedule, handling territory expansions, communicating with our vendors to make sure they have everything they need…

The backbone of my position is production though, and that involves quality control of our manga. The best days are when I get to do that—I mean, what's better than getting paid to stare at manga all day? Even when there are 160 pages to fix in a volume, life just seems a little brighter when it's manga! :D

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR FASHION STYLE?
I'd say playfully edgy. I've always been a firm believer that your clothing should reflect how you feel that day, and therefore I don't want to commit to only one style or influence. However, the most important thing is to be comfortable and also expressive—so since I live in San Francisco halfway up one of the biggest hills in the city, no heels for me! I'll swear by my collection of fun sneakers and slip-ons.

HOW IS YOUR STYLE INFLUENCED BY MANGA, ANIME OR JAPANESE FASHION?
I've loved manga since I was eight years old, so it's always been a huge influence—particularly Ai Yazawa's work, like Nana and Paradise Kiss. I was even Nana Osaki for Halloween one year!

WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE CLOTHING STORES AND FASHION WEBSITES?
ModCloth is a great resource for me, since it's very hard for me to find clothes that fit and I do love a retro look. My favorite alternative/Goth store from when I lived in NYC, Trash and Vaudeville, happily ships all over the USA, so I regularly check there for lots of items. After that, I buy from everywhere! Anywhere from Macy's to a thrift store in the Mission District—you never know where your next favorite dress could be hiding.

WHAT FASHION ACCESSORY CAN YOU ABSOLUTELY POSITIVELY NOT LIVE WITHOUT?
My combat boots. They go with everything and are super comfortable, which is especially helpful when I'm standing for four hours at a metal show just so I can get that spot up front by the stage.

WHAT DO YOU LIKE TO DO OUTSIDE OF WORK AS A CREATIVE OUTLET AND FOR FUN?
I love to see live music. It's so inspirational and always makes me feel better connected with the universe. My favorite genre is heavy metal, but I'll go see pretty much anyone—some of my favorite new bands were discovered by someone asking me to a show and me replying, "I've never heard of them. Let's do this!"

WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE CURRENT VIZ MANGA OR ANIME?
My current favorite new manga is Tokyo Ghoul. It was released digitally first until volume six, so I got to read it before everyone else, and I loved it! I was incredibly impressed with it from chapter one.

WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE VIZ MANGA OR ANIME OF ALL TIME?
Rurouni Kenshin, always and forever. It has everything I could possibly want in a series: action, romance, relevant historical fiction, and an epic adventure with a purposeful sense of accomplishment at the end.
