The world's favorite ninja!

By Mark De Vera July 12, 2016

Between Anime Expo and San Diego Comic Con, July is the month of pop culture! To celebrate July as pop culture month, we at VIZ Media want to call out a few series that we consider to be pop culture powerhouses as the month goes by! Next up: the world's favorite ninja!

The manga boom in the early 2000s was an exciting time, a sort of revolution in which many in the English-speaking world discovered the joy of manga for the first time. Since then many manga series have sold in the millions and have reached a mainstream audience, but none have matched the success and popularity of Naruto. Naruto is hands-down the bestselling manga series in the English-speaking world. Naruto's place in the manga world is unrivaled, and in the realm of the graphic novel industry it stands beside mainstream hits such as Watchmen, Batman and The Walking Dead. Naruto is nothing short of a pop culture sensation.

Unfamiliar with Naruto? Here's the series synopsis: Twelve years ago the Village Hidden in the Leaves was attacked by a fearsome threat. A nine-tailed fox spirit claimed the life of the village leader, the Hokage, and many others. Today, the village is at peace and a troublemaking kid named Naruto is struggling to graduate from Ninja Academy. His goal may be to become the next Hokage, but his true destiny will be much more complicated…

Naruto gives everything one could ask for in a Shonen Jump adventure. It has a wonderful cast of shinobi with unique skills, abilities, personalities and ambitions. It has an imaginative story that spans several generations and goes through numerous twists and turns. It will go down in history as one of the greatest from Shonen Jump, a reputation this beloved series has rightfully earned.
