Arm yourself with the weapon of knowledge!
Welcome to the Nihongo Lesson feature. We strive to give you useful manga-based Japanese language tips and maybe even a glimpse into the translation process. This week’s lesson will feature terms from the super-exciting series Dr. Stone! With Senku out of the picture, it was up to Taiju and Yuzuriha to fight off Tsukasa. And with some impressive teamwork and a giant explosion, they actually managed to escape!
TOMODACHI (ともだち)
Quick review of a word we’ve done before. TOMODACHI means “friend.” Shonen Jump manga is full of TOMODACHI.
SHINYUU (しんゆう)
SHINYUU is a TOMODACHI that has leveled up. A super TOMODACHI, if you will. Other people refer to this as a “best friend.” One of the best things about Shonen Jump is when formerly bitter rivals become friends. Seeing Naruto and Sasuke tease each other while they cooperate is a real treat in Boruto!
BUKI (ぶき)
BUKI is “weapon.” Last week’s Dr. Stone chapter title was “Weapon of Science,” or KAGAKU NO BUKI. That’s pretty much the theme of this series—using science to fight off threats, whether they be environmental or a crazy guy who wears a lion as a jacket!
REISEI (れいせい)
REISEI means “calm” or “composure.” When Taiju sees that Tsukasa may have killed Senku, he goes through a myriad of emotions. Yuzuriha thinks he may have lost his mind, but Taiju assures her that he’s still REISEI. Did we just see one of Taiju’s greatest strengths? Being able to remain REISEI under pressure is going to be really important for surviving the Stone World.
